Today, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Shri Thanedar issued the following statement:

“The stories we’ve heard from the victims in the Larry Nassar case are devastating. It’s hard to believe that these vile acts could have continued for so long without anyone knowing or any actions being taken.

“I demand that Attorney General Schuette conduct a comprehensive investigation of MSU’s handling of the Nassar situation. There must be a thorough review of how complaints were handled by MSU as well as by the Ingham County Prosecutor’s office. We need to know whether anyone else is responsible for failing to act and stop these crimes from being committed.

“The Attorney General must take immediate action to resolve the lingering questions and begin to restore public trust.

“As I did in December, today I am calling for President Simon to step down or be removed from her position. I also appeal to the MSU Board of Trustees to voluntarily resign their positions. MSU should immediately release the findings of its internal investigation. The Attorney General must investigate what happened and Michigan’s legislature must enact legislation that requires colleges, universities and other public entities to turn over sexual assault investigations to local police, and not campus-based law enforcement. We need action, we need leadership and we need transparency. Now.”
